Great Price Marlene Koch's Sensational Splenda Recipes: Over 375 Recipes Low in Sugar, Fat, and Calories

Marlene Koch's Sensational Splenda Recipes: Over 375 Recipes Low in Sugar, Fat, and Calories Review

I have this book for awhile now and held off reviewing until I tried several recipes. I found every one of them a little too sweet except for the cheesecakes. However, that said, I do not like sweet chocolate - prefer bittersweet, so take that into account when considering the book. The cheesecakes were my favorite, especially the denser New York style. The unbelievable chocolate cake was very good, the brownies not so good; also too sweet and not as chewy as I like. However, I will decrease the Splenda in the future and possibly bake the brownies for a slightly shorter time to increase the 'chewy'. The pork was very good but again too sweet for my taste. It is an excellent book for what it is - sugar restricted recipes for fun foods. I have given one as a gift so I do like the book, albeit with the above-mentioned tweaking.

Great Price Cakewalk: A Memoir

Cakewalk: A Memoir Review

Kate Moses is a gifted writer. She crosses paths with so many of my own memories as I grew up in the same time and place. The funny thing is the same could be said for the dozen or so other locales her parents raised her in. Her memoir catches the spirit of the 1960s from San Francisco to Washington, DC. I can't believe any other household was as full of sweets as my own. There is a very good tale of her mother trying to steal a towel out of Pat Nixon's White House powder room.

I would love to read more from this author. Perhaps she could write a novel on the Romanov treasures that she claims her family burned at a San Francisco dump?

Product Overview

From the author of the internationally acclaimed Wintering: A Novel of Sylvia Plath comes a funny, touching memoir of a crummy—and crumby—childhood.

Growing up in the 1960s and ’70s, Kate Moses was surrounded by sugar: Twinkies in the basement freezer, honey on the fried chicken, Baby Ruth bars in her father’s sock drawer. But sweetness of the more intangible variety was harder to come by. Her parents were disastrously mismatched, far too preoccupied with their mutual misery to notice its effects on their kids.

A frustrated artist, Kate’s beautiful, capricious mother lived in a constant state of creative and marital emergency, enlisting Kate as her confidante—“We’re the girls, we have to stick together”—and instructing her three children to refer to her in public as their babysitter. Kate’s father was aloof, ambitious, and prone to blasts of withering abuse increasingly directed at the daughter who found herself standing between her embattled parents. Kate looked for comfort in the imaginary worlds of books and found refuge in the kitchen, where she taught herself to bake and entered the one realm where she was able to wield control.

Telling her own story with the same lyricism, compassion, and eye for lush detail she brings to her fiction, coupled with the candor and humor she is known for in her personal essays, Kate Moses leavens each tale of her coming-of-age in Cakewalk with a recipe from her lifetime of confectionary obsession. There is the mysteriously erotic German Chocolate Cake implicated in a birds-and-bees speech when Kate was seven, the gingerbread people her mother baked for Christmas the year Kate officially realized she was fat, the chocolate chip cookies Kate used to curry favor during a hilariously gruesome adolescence, and the brownies she baked for her idol, the legendary M.F.K. Fisher, who pronounced them “delicious.”

Filled with the abundance and joy that were so lacking in Kate’s youth, Cakewalk is a wise, loving tribute to life in all its sweetness as well as its bitterness and, ultimately, a recipe for forgiveness.

Great Price Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill Cookbook: Explosive Flavors from the Southwestern Kitchen

Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill Cookbook: Explosive Flavors from the Southwestern Kitchen Review

My fiance' and I spent New Year's in Las Vegas this year. While there, we dined at Mesa Grill for the first time. The food was spectacular--no other word for it other than maybe fabulous, outstanding...you get the point. We enjoyed it so much that we canceled reservations at another well known Vegas restaurant later in the week to dine there again instead. There wasn't a single thing we sampled that was less than pefect. We travel a lot and dine in many wonderful restaurants--Mesa Grill is easily in the top 5 of our favorites list. That being said, when I got home I couldn't wait to order this cookbook and see if the dishes in it were the same or at least very similar to the ones we enjoyed in the restaurant. What a wonderful surprise to find that they are! The pumpkin soup, the pork tenderloin (WOW), the 16 spice chicken, the sauces--everything has just been great. The book has a ton of brightly colored pictures of the food and is very easy to follow, even for someone who wouldn't necessarily call themselves a "gourmet". Some of the ingredients might be unusual but I've found most are easily accessed in my local markets and what I can't find there, I've been able to purchase here on Amazon.com. We are having a great time working our way through this book. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys bold flavors.

Great Price The Bartender's Bible: 1001 Mixed Drinks and Everything You Need to Know to Set Up Your Bar

The Bartender's Bible: 1001 Mixed Drinks and Everything You Need to Know to Set Up Your Bar Review

This edition is useful not only for its recipes, but for its information, as well. The introduction has a similar feel to the early chapters of The Joy of Cooking in that it offers instruction on the essentials for stocking a home bar as well as comprehensive lists of equipment and glassware -- complete with illustrations. The recipes are thorough in detailing method, which is much more useful than some Internet collections and other books I've seen which only list the ingredients (and sometimes measures) for a given drink. There is also a bit of fun and education to be found here. Each chapter and most of the hallmark drinks have write-ups about their history or fun anecdotes.

I felt the need to write this review after reading another for the same title in which the reviewer aired grievance about the book not including an alphabetical list of the drinks by name. That is what the index in the back of the book is for. Maybe he just never got that far. I have several books on cocktail recipes, and this one is definitely my go-to. Having only 1001 recipes, it is incomplete, but it's the most useful one on my shelf.

Product Overview

Mix Drinks Like A Pro

Now you can with this indispensable handbook, the most thorough'and thoroughly accessible'bartending guide ever created for both professional and home use. Encyclopedic in scope and filled with clear, simple instructions, The Bartender's Bible includes information on:

  • Stocking and equipping a bar'from liquors and mixers to condiments, garnishes, and equipment

  • Shot-by-shot recipes for over 1,000 cocktails and mixed drinks from bourbon to rum to whiskey

  • Wine drinks

  • Beer drinks

  • Nonalcoholic drinks

  • Special category drinks'tropical, classics, aperitifs, cordials, hot drinks, and party punches

  • Anecdotes and histories of favorite potables

  • And more!

If you've ever wondered whether to shake or stir a proper Martini, or what to do with those dusty bottles of flavored liqueurs, The Bartender's Bible is the only book you need!

A bartender, as a rule, is a person who enjoys the company of others, endeavors to solve problems, listens to the woes of the world, sympathizes with the mistreated, laughs with the comedians, cheers up the down at heart, and generally controls the atmosphere at his or her bar. A bartender is the manager of moods, the master of mixology.

Certain scenarios are played out over and over again in bars everywhere. The questions are basically the same; only the details vary: What's in a true Singapore Sling? How long has the Martini been around? What's the difference between a Fix and a Fizz? A reference book is as necessary to a bartender as ice.

-- from The Bartender's Bible

Check Out Home Cheese Making: Recipes for 75 Delicious Cheeses for $10.00

Home Cheese Making: Recipes for 75 Delicious Cheeses Review

New to cheese making I wanted to get the lowdown on what it takes, plus have a bank of recipies to try out. This book delivers all this plus lots of very nice anecdotes of other people's experiences and successes.

Being American based, this book has all its weights and measures in imperial. This is the only fault I can find with the book, in this day an age where only 3 countries in the world still use Imperial, I would have thought that metric equivalents would have been provided, or at the very least a conversion table in the appendices. Hence the four stars, get that sorted and I'd give it a five no problem.

Measurement conversions aside, I'm looking forward to trying out some of the many recipese provided in the book, they look great!

Great Price Comfort Me with Apples: More Adventures at the Table

Comfort Me with Apples: More Adventures at the Table Review

** spoiler alert ** For me this was a much more difficult book than "Tender at the Bone," emotionally speaking. I have an eight-and-a-half month old daughter, which is very near the same age Reichl's daughter, Gavi, was when they had to give her back to her birth parents.

I was also more deeply troubled than Reichl probably wanted her readers to be by her affairs. Even as she seemed happier with Michael, I never felt quite settled, and wanted things to be back the way they had been earlier in her relationship with Doug. I do appreciate that she was unwaveringly candid about her affairs, but the months (years?) of dishonesty were almost surreal for me to imagine (but then, I'm applying that to my relationship).

My very favorite parts were Reichl getting used to her job as a restaurant critic, learning what things were "expected" of her position and how that conflicted with her hippie lifestyle, and, as always, her writing about her family. Her writing about her father is so tender and realistic that I really got invested in their relationship. She also writes about her relationship with her mother well, and I think she does a good job of making the reader understand their old arguments and the roles they make the other fall into -- like "PussyCat" -- on a very emotional level.

I would give this three-and-a-half stars if I could, because I felt troubled throughout the book by her (and her husband's) affairs in a way that wasn't ever really resolved for me. Not that I expected it to be taken care of neatly -- these are real human lives, after all -- but I just never felt comfortable because of it.

Product Overview

In this delightful sequel to her bestseller Tender at the Bone, Ruth Reichl returns with more tales of love, life, and marvelous meals. Comfort Me with Apples picks up Reichl’s story in 1978, when she puts down her chef’s toque and embarks on a career as a restaurant critic. Her pursuit of good food and good company leads her to New York and China, France and Los Angeles, and her stories of cooking and dining with world-famous chefs range from the madcap to the sublime. Through it all, Reichl makes each and every course a hilarious and instructive occasion for novices and experts alike. She shares some of her favorite recipes while also sharing the intimacies of her personal life in a style so honest and warm that readers will feel they are enjoying a conversation over a meal with a friend.

Great Price Bohemian San Francisco - Its Restaurants And Their Most Famous Recipes - The Elegant Art Of Dining

Bohemian San Francisco - Its Restaurants And Their Most Famous Recipes - The Elegant Art Of Dining Review

Interesting, if not especially well-written. As a former resident of San Francisco, I enjoyed this book for its comprehensive overview of the pre-1906 streets, restaurants and culture of the city. I was a little shocked by the author's casual racism (attitudes and words which were probably commonplace back then, even in "bohemian San Francisco.") And the florid, overblown Victorian language is a bit much at times. But overall, worth reading.

Great Price Alinea

Alinea Review

I had the pleasure of dining at Alinea in June of 09. My son requested this as his graduation present from U Chicago Law School. I have eaten at the finest restaurants around the world and all I can say is Alinea is in a class by itself. I was given a short tour of the kitchen afterwards. It made me think of NASA. If you are a foodie this is Mecca. The book is an astonishingly beautiful coffee table class book. The size, photography, design, and production conjures up a fine art book. I have been a serious amateur chef for nearly 40 years and what is very clear is that this is not a book for beginners. It assumes a fairly high level of skill and familiarity with advanced practices. That said, this is a treasure trove of innovation and methods to challenge the skills and imagination of anyone who loves to cook. The only other book I think it compares to is The French Laundry Cookbook by Thomas Keller. Both of these chefs rank amongst the top innovators in the world of fine cuisine. If you really want to push yourself as a chef buy this book. If you simply want an astonishingly beautiful coffee table conversation piece buy this book. Whatever you do make sure dining at Alinea is on your "Bucket List."

The Food Nanny Rescues Dinner: Easy Family Meals for Every Day of the Week Review

I guess it's all a matter of taste, but I've made almost 2 weeks of her recipes (2/night - main dish and side/salad/bread), and every one has been delicious! These are dishes that I wouldn't know the difference if I ordered them in a restaurant. I was getting really bad at coming up with dinners, and we kept having the same stuff over and over. I've been really happy with planning out my week and not having to wonder what I was going to make for dinner. So far the recipes have been pretty easy, and I actually enjoyed making them! I find it really hard to believe that the other reviewer didn't like the recipes. Granted, before I found this cookbook I was making spaghetti, hamburgers, and tacos, but I can't believe that they thought the recipes were bland. I give this ***** (5 stars)!!!

Others have reviewed this book well, but I want to add something important.

This book is wonderful for people recovering from any kind of surgery of the GI tract. Anyone with issues digesting food, or plagued by gas, bloating, reflux, constipation, or diarrhea, should seriously consider buying this book.

Most "issues" disappear within a day or two, and by day three, most feel "normal" again.

It's a very healthy way to eat, stressing fresh, REAL foods, and as others have said, the recipes are pretty darn good too.

For those concerned with the "diet" aspect, should they need to gain weight instead of lose it, this book is still useful. For one thing, you will be able to keep food down. For another, you can always increase the fat content and still gain or maintain your weight.

Check Out The Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook: Whole Foods Recipes for Personal and Planetary Health, Second Edition for $22.95

The Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook: Whole Foods Recipes for Personal and Planetary Health, Second Edition Review

This has been the only cookbook I have been using for the last 1 1/2 months and I keep discovering more great things every day!

I started with a couple of weeks of testing some recipes to see if I could make it through the Elimination diet laid out in the book and wasn't disappointed. Many of the recipes are truly originial...Ali Segersten is a master when it comes to using herbs and spices and original cooking techniques.

The Elimination diet scared me a little...my favorite meals are a tall latte in the morning and bread with cheese and wine for dinner, neither one you can have on this...but I was finally ready to find out just what foods are keeping me from feeling my best. While I am a pretty healthy, active person, fatigue and recurring sinus issues are bothering me and if it's in my control to improve those through eating the right meals, I am up for it!

I am now on day 29 with no intention of stopping anytime soon...I feel great and am amazed at how easy it has been. Besides the physical well-bring, my mind is so much clearer, calmer, happier and less anxious. I have often wondered if I have adult ADD...if it's the not eating Gluten that is relieving the "brain fog", I am happy to cut out wheat from my diet. We'll see if that's it when I get to the challenge phase. Being a pretty hyper person to start with, not drinking coffee is probably the right thing for me anyway, too!

Eating wholesome, nutritious food for each meal, keeps me so well nourished, that I just don't feel the horrible cravings I remember from diets I had done in the past. I am never hungry and my bloodsugar ups and downs are gone(agave nectar in my herbal teas is the best thing ever!).

I am doing the elimination diet strictly for health reasons, not for weightloss. However, it is the perfect plan to follow if that is your intent. In fact, I am having a hard time NOT losing weight. I feel like I am eating like a horse and still lost a few pounds unintentionally.

Yes, this book takes some adjusting to, no matter what your current diet is, but if you stick with this kind of cooking, you will realize the payoffs when it comes to your health and you will want to keep going. I am reading "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver at the same time and eating organically grown foods, preferably from local sources makes sense on so many levels.

Favorite recipes (that the rest of the family will happily eat, too) are:
- Quinoa and black bean salad p. 234 (my teenagers tried it and asked for more!)
- Wild Salmon with Ginger Lime Marinade p. 276 (to die for...)
- Autumn Harvest Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette p. 178
- Blueberry Fruit Pie with Raw Nut Crust p. 334
- Creamy Cauliflower Soup p. 162
- Coconut Vegetable Curry with Chickpeas p. 255
- roasted red pepper soup p. 164

I bought a Blendtec blender to make the smoothies with from Costco (they match the 7 year warranty offered by Vitamix through Costco demos only) and have not regretted it. Not eating out and not drinking wine for a month paid for it, and there is no way I would give it up, now. I use it every day and love it! A friend of mine uses her regular blender and the smoothies are just a little chunkier, but still ok, if you don't want to go for the expense.

[...]. The first part of the Elimination diet is very restricted and I felt the book is lacking a little in getting you through the rough days. The authors addressed that in their blog and added lots of recipes and other very useful information there.

The Cinnamon-Sunflower truffles got me through my sweet cravings and I had to start hiding the box, so my teenagers wouldn't eat them all!!
[...]

Now that I am getting to the challenge phase, I can't wait to add some other grains so I can try some of the baked goods!

Vegan Brunch: Homestyle Recipes Worth Waking Up For--From Asparagus Omelets to Pumpkin Pancakes Review

describes both Isa and (all)her cookbooks. The recipes create really enjoyable food, with intelligent ingredients, producing sassy flavor! The only thing I question is WHY any Vegan would want a recipe to make fake dead meat? The book has so many great, straight vegan choices, why encourage the carnivor? Pretty soon "humans" will have eaten all other creatures to extinction except maybe cows and chickens and they, mere clones of their former selves, are crowded into stock yards and poltry factories being fattened on cloned corn!
Given that, Vegan excludes even fake meat as far as I am concerned.

The Lost Art of Pie Making Made Easy Review

I love this little recipe book! Everything I've made out of here so far has been nothing short of tasty. Almost all of the recipes contained within are from old cookbooks (some well over 150 years old!) and the author has revised them to translate to today's baking standards. Also there are fun tidbits of information and folklore sprinkled between recipes. If you love pie and can get your hands on a copy you won't be dissapointed.

Great Price Mediterranean Summer: A Season on France's Cote d'Azur and Italy's Costa Bella

Mediterranean Summer: A Season on France's Cote d'Azur and Italy's Costa Bella Review

I loved this story as it feeds my fantasies for travel to exotic places and my love of cooking. I took away a new commitment to shop in the European way, only buying enough foods for several days instead of stocking my frig for 2 weeks. The Italians have a respect for living, food, eating and conversation. I'm sad to think about all the fresh fruits and vegetables that got lost in the back of my frig and wound up as science experiments. I plan to re-read "DA-veeeed's" book and savor it once again. Thank you for a new perspective on enjoying the simple things of food and living, David. Lisa

Product Overview

“Saturday was dawning warm, with only a gentle wind under a light blue sky as we got under way. . . . With the motor cut out, I could hear the whispered splash of the sea against the hull as we knifed through the Mediterranean. The calming noise, along with the gentle rocking, lulled me into a Zen calm as I went about preparing the crew’s lunch. . . . By keeping just a couple of miles offshore, we had some beautiful sights to our starboard side: the harbor towns of La Napoule and quaint Théoule-sur-Mer, . . . the sensational coastline of the Corniche de l’Estérel. . . . All of this I could see through the porthole in the galley. . . . Italy was only a week away.”
La Dolce Vita at sea. . .

An alluring, evocative summer voyage on the Mediterranean and into the enchanting seaside towns of France’s Cote d’Azur and Italy’s Costa Bella by a young American chef aboard an Italian billionaire couple’s spectacular yacht.

Having begun his cooking career in some of New York’s and San Francisco’s best restaurants, David Shalleck undertakes a European culinary adventure, a quest to discover what it really means to be a chef through a series of demanding internships in Provence and throughout Italy. After four years, as he debates whether it is finally time to return stateside and pursue something more permanent, he stumbles on a rare opportunity: to become the chef on board Serenity, the classic sailing yacht owned by one of Italy’s most prominent couples. They present Shalleck with the ultimate challenge: to prepare all the meals for them and their guests for the summer, with no repeats, comprised exclusively of local ingredients that reflect the flavors of each port, presented flawlessly to the couple’s uncompromising taste— all from the confines of the yacht’s galley while at sea.

Serenity’s five-month journey starts on the French Riviera, continues along Italy’s western coast to Amalfi, crosses the Tyrrhenian Sea to Sardinia, up to Corsica, and back to St. Tropez for the season-ending regatta. Shalleck captures the glittery Riviera social scene, the distinctive sights and sounds of the unique ports along the way, the work hard/play hard life of being a crew member, and the challenges of producing world-class cuisine for the stylish and demanding owners and their guests. An intimate view of the most exclusive of worlds, Mediterranean Summer offers readers a new perspective on breathtaking places, a memorable portrait of old world elegance and life at sea, as well recipes and tips to recreate the delectable food.

Check Out My Life from Scratch: A Sweet Journey of Starting Over, One Cake at a Time for $8.21

My Life from Scratch: A Sweet Journey of Starting Over, One Cake at a Time Review

In "My Life From Scratch," Gesine Bullock Prado, the sister of movie star Sandra Bullock, details her life as a small pastry shop owner intertwined with moments of how she got to this point. After finishing law school, Gesine decides that working as a lawyer is not for her and joins her famous sister's production company instead. Several tidbits from Gesine's old Hollywood life are recounted, as well as her happiness at her new life as a baker.

The chapters have cute illustrations and--except for the first and last chapters--are chronologically organized by the time of day to coincide with Bullock-Prado's daily responsibilities as the owner of a small pastry shop. Each chapter ends with a mouth-watering recipe, giving this memoir a cookbook feel.

Also included are various personal moments from Gesine's life--like her early childhood in Germany, her relationship with her mother and her celebrity sister, as well as the interconnection of her European identity with her American one.

The book is a quick read-- sentimental at times, and hilarious at other times. In the end, it's a journey of someone who decides to take the unconventional route and work their dream job, overcoming obstacles in the process. Right in the middle of reading it, I had a strong craving for chocolate. Overall, a delicious read.

Great Price The Way to Make Wine: How to Craft Superb Table Wines at Home

The Way to Make Wine: How to Craft Superb Table Wines at Home Review

I am about 65% through this book. It consists of 2 sections. The first section is a detailed view of the steps to make red, rose, or white wine. The second section goes into extensive detail on the chemistry you need to know to make first rate wine. Many detailed techniques are discussed throughout the book. Though this is the first wine making book I have read, I like it a lot. It is well written and easy to read. It explains why the winemakers needs to know total acidity as well as ph. It also discusses sulfides in detail.

Great Price Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease Review

I have read McDougall's books which are outstanding, Dean Ornish books also; but Esselstyn is the most compelling of the three. I just like the way he presents the information. He is direct and makes it clear what you have to do to reverse the condition of high cholesterol and artery disease. I like the overall picture of his family (all of his children following in his footsteps and how they were outstanding atheletes. Esselstyn's work also is convincing because of the fact he is the member of a 'world-class' institution, the Cleveland Clinic, which is the world's number 1 medical center for heart surgery. His bold departure from standard treatment of heart disease is both startling and compelling. I have been on his diet for about three weeks and already can tell the difference in my general well-being.

Product Overview

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease challenges conventional cardiology by posing a compelling, revolutionary idea-that we can, in fact, abolish the heart disease epidemic in this country by changing our diets. Drawing on the groundbreaking results of his twenty-year nutritional study, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., a former surgeon, researcher, and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic, convincingly argues that a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent and stop the progression of heart disease, but also reverse its effects. Furthermore, it can eliminate the need for expensive and invasive surgical interventions, such as bypass and stents, no matter how far the disease has progressed. Dr. Esselstyn began his research with a group of patients who joined his study after traditional medical procedures to treat their advanced heart disease had failed. Within months of following a plant-based, oil-free diet, their angina symptoms eased, their cholesterol levels dropped significantly, and they experienced a marked improvement in blood flow to the heart. Twenty years later, the majority of Dr. Esselstyn's patients continue to follow his program and remain heart-attack proof.

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease explains the science behind these dramatic results, and offers readers the same simple, nutrition-based plan that has changed the lives of his patients forever. In addition, Dr. Esselstyn provides more than 150 delicious recipes that he and his wife, Ann Crile Esselstyn, have enjoyed for years and used with their patients. Clearly written and backed by irrefutable scientific evidence, startling photos of angiograms, and inspiring personal stories, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease will empower readers to take charge of their heart health. It is a powerful call for a paradigm shift in heart-disease therapy.
