My Life from Scratch: A Sweet Journey of Starting Over, One Cake at a Time Review
In "My Life From Scratch," Gesine Bullock Prado, the sister of movie star Sandra Bullock, details her life as a small pastry shop owner intertwined with moments of how she got to this point. After finishing law school, Gesine decides that working as a lawyer is not for her and joins her famous sister's production company instead. Several tidbits from Gesine's old Hollywood life are recounted, as well as her happiness at her new life as a baker.
The chapters have cute illustrations and--except for the first and last chapters--are chronologically organized by the time of day to coincide with Bullock-Prado's daily responsibilities as the owner of a small pastry shop. Each chapter ends with a mouth-watering recipe, giving this memoir a cookbook feel.
Also included are various personal moments from Gesine's life--like her early childhood in Germany, her relationship with her mother and her celebrity sister, as well as the interconnection of her European identity with her American one.
The book is a quick read-- sentimental at times, and hilarious at other times. In the end, it's a journey of someone who decides to take the unconventional route and work their dream job, overcoming obstacles in the process. Right in the middle of reading it, I had a strong craving for chocolate. Overall, a delicious read.
