Great Price Vegan with a Vengeance : Over 150 Delicious, Cheap, Animal-Free Recipes That Rock

Vegan with a Vengeance : Over 150 Delicious, Cheap, Animal-Free Recipes That Rock Review

Whether you just want to have a veggie night a few times a week or month, or make a full switch to being vegan, or have been one for years, or just want to go vegan for a spell to help clear up breakouts, this is truly a unique book.

While I have many vegan and vegetarian cookbooks, some I wind up giving away because the recipes taste like you are cooking for health only, rather than for gourmet consuming. Whether you want to be vegan or not, you really can have the best of both worlds. Not only do these dishes make you forget they are vegan, they contain ingredients you have heard of and don't require an internet search to find or figure out.

But yes, they are healthy...and full of protein and all the things a full-time vegan would want in their diet for optimum energy.

In fact, many dishes are far better to me than the original version. I love, for example, the peach cobbler. Removing milk and eggs in this cobbler crust simply make it healthier in eliminating the added fat, not healthier tasting. It's great!

There is a great ricotta in here that isn't ricotta...really supreme in any stuffed shells or lasagna. Great pizza recipes, a really good homemade veggie burger recipe, curried tempeh mango salad sandwiches that were truly gourmet, pumpkin waffle, very moist muffin recipes, a green thai curry we love, wonderful spring rolls...

The recipes are easy to make and obviously flavor was thought out...not just eliminating something from a regular recipe to change it up for the cookbook.

Negatives: None for the recipes. Haven't had a bad one yet. If you are in need of pictures, this book contains just a few in middle inserts. However, those are nice, large, and in full-color. That's never a big deal to me but I know some want pics with their recipes. The paper is regular book paper rather than glossy so it's not so easy to wipe clean if that's important.

It's a big cookbook at just under 260 pages so you get quite a varitey.

Conclusion: This is actually my favorite vegan cookbook.

Check Out Supermarket Vegan: 225 Meat-Free, Egg-Free, Dairy-Free Recipes for Real People in the Real World

Supermarket Vegan: 225 Meat-Free, Egg-Free, Dairy-Free Recipes for Real People in the Real World Review

This is my new favorite book! I have been toying with the idea of going vegetarian but found that most of the vegetarian cookbooks I've looked at rely heavily on dairy products (I'm lactose intolerant so that is not helpful). So I bought this book on a lark and now all of a sudden I'm a vegan! I've tried over a dozen recipes so far and my husband (a confirmed meat eater) and my kids (ages 4 & 6) have loved them all, as have I. I live in a relatively small town and have been able to find all of the ingredients so far at my local supermarket. I can't wait to buy Donna Klein's other cookbooks.

More of America's Most Wanted Recipes: More Than 200 Simple and Delicious Secret Restaurant Recipes--All for or Less! Review

This cookbook brings recipes from popular restaurants to the cooks at home. Ron Douglas says they are under , but sometimes that is a serving per person.
For some the introductory sections can be confusing; one is titled Time saving ideas and another Cost-cutting ideas. So in 4 pages you'll be told to go to a butcher and go to a large warehouse to buy meat. To cut costs get a whole chicken and cut it up, but then to save time spend the extra money on bagged prepared salad greens - certainly less time to cut up than a chicken. After reading this some people might not know what to do?
There are some very good recipes in here, including a baked corned beef brisket, good and different from the usual use of briskets for corned beef and cabbage. Probably the 2 most famous recipes included are Outback Steakhouse's bloomin' onion and Pepperidge Farm's Milano cookies.
Included are recipes from A&W, Applebee's, Benihana, Chi-chi's, Chili's, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Macaroni Grill and Sonic Drive-in among others.

These are not the easiest recipes in the world to make, but a cook of average ability could do them. Many are fried or cooked in oil, but they are taste proven and not impossible to make.

Great Price Viva Vegan!: 200 Authentic and Fabulous Recipes for Latin Food Lovers

Viva Vegan!: 200 Authentic and Fabulous Recipes for Latin Food Lovers Review

Venezuelan-American cookbook author Terry Hope Romero (Veganomicon: The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook) makes Latin food vegan-friendly in Viva Vegan! This collection of 200 vegan recipes includes offerings from Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. You'll find updated favorites like tostones and mofongo (Puerto Rico), stuffed arepas (Venezuela and Colombia), tamales and tortas (Mexico), ropa vieja (Cuba), ceviche (Peru), and more.

If you're new to vegan and / or Latin cuisine, fear not! Romero thoughtfully includes a primer on the vegan Latin pantry, along with numerous sidebars, suggested menus (The Buena Vegan Social Club, Colombian Colors, Buenos Aires Potluck, Sofrito So Good, etc.), and a quick-start shopping list (which can be printed at the author's website) that'll have you whipping up vegan delights with Latin flair in "sólo unos minutos" (okay, maybe un poco más for some of the recipes). Quirky Spanish phrases pepper the book; they may not be grammatically correct, but they're likely already familiar to non-Spanish speakers.

Recipes are straightforward and in easy-to-read typeface; recipe names are in all-caps red, while the ingredients and steps are supplemented with tips, uses, and variations. You'll find animal-free versions of staples like dulce de leche, chicharrones (instead of deep-fried pork rinds, Romero uses Chinese-style tofu; I would imagine that tofu skins would also crisp up nicely), masa dough (using vegan margarine and vegan shortening to replace the lard used in traditional tamales), and chorizo (there's an included recipe for seitan chorizo, but Field Roast makes a very good (and spicy) chipotle vegan sausage that could be substituted). If you don't live in a city with a large Hispanic population, some of the items such as guava paste, masa harina and cleaned corn husks for tamales, frozen yuca chunks, and aji panca paste may be difficult to find.

I loved the recipes I tried: the very Spanish Swiss chard with raisins and capers was fantastic! I substituted kale for the chard and golden raisins for the dark raisins and increased the fruit to ½ cup. Absolutely delicious! The oil crisps the garlic and coats the greens (I reduced the oil to 1 tablespoon), and the capers add a delightfully salty tang that contrasts beautifully with the raisins' sweetness.

My second attempt was the sweet and nutty roasted stuffed plantains. They were divine, filled with a sweet-salty combo of sea salt, brown sugar, and walnuts (I'm vegetarian, not vegan, so I used a sprinkle of queso fresco during the last few minutes of cooking). Make sure if you're roasting plantains (as opposed to frying, which works better with unripe green plantains) that their peels are almost completely black; if your plantains aren't fully ripe, they won't soften up as you bake them (lesson learned!).

Like most vegan cookbooks, Viva Vegan! relies heavily on soy and wheat meat substitutes, including tofu, TVP, soy creamer / soymilk and seitan. If you're allergic to soy or wheat, there are plenty of wonderful veggie and grain-based dishes like gallo pinto, red beans with Dominican-style sazón, potato-chickpea enchiladas, and spicy tortilla casserole with roasted poblanos that you can enjoy.

To help you wash down your newly-veganified Latin cuisine, the author provides recipes for sangria, michelada (ice-spiked beer, lime, salt and hot sauce), and the ubiquitous mojito. Sweet endings include pineapple-raisin sweet tamales (the fruit is worked into the dough), deep-fried churros con chocolate, and tropically-inspired gems such as majarete (sweet coconut corn pudding), dulce de batata, papaya-lime sorbet and sweet corn ice cream.

The verdict: Viva Vegan! is a great addition to any kitchen and a great way to add a little "sabor latino" to your next meal!

Lidia Cooks from the Heart of Italy: A Feast of 175 Regional Recipes Review

If you like to cook and are not scared of trying recipes from different regions, this is the book you must have in your kitchen. I watch Lidia's TV shows and tried several of her recipes. I find her food delicious and suitable for most occasions. She has several recipes that are easy to make and use every day ingredients. If you are looking for something special and may be a bit more complicated for a special occasion, she has those types of recipes in this book as well. I watched her cook several of her recipes from this book on TV and I learned a lot from her about little details that make life easier at the kitchen or add some extra flavor to your dish. One thing I like about this book is that you can easily change some of the ingredients to your liking or what you have in your fridge that day and most of the time it turns out great. She gives you a base to work with and you can play with it to give your touch if you want to. I highly recommend anything she publishes, especially this book.

Product Overview

In this inspiring new book, Lidia Bastianich awakens in us a new respect for food and for the people who produce it in the little-known parts of Italy that she explores. All of the recipes reflect the regions from which they spring, and in translating them to our home kitchens, Lidia passes on time-honored techniques and wonderful, uncomplicated recipes for dishes bursting with different regional flavors—the kind of elemental, good family cooking that is particularly appreciated today.

Penetrating the heart of Italy—starting at the north, working down to the tip, and ending in Sardinia—Lidia unearths a wealth of recipes:

From Trentino–Alto Adige: Delicious Dumplings with Speck (cured pork); apples accenting soup, pasta, salsa, and salad; local beer used to roast a chicken and to braise beef
From Lombardy: A world of rice—baked in a frittata, with lentils, with butternut squash, with gorgonzola, and the special treat of Risotto Milan-Style with Marrow and Saffron
From Valle d’Aosta: Polenta with Black Beans and Kale, and local fontina featured in fondue, in a roasted pepper salad, and embedded in veal chops
From Liguria: An array of Stuffed Vegetables, a bread salad, and elegant Veal Stuffed with a Mosaic of Vegetables
From Emilia-Romagna: An olive oil dough for making the traditional, versatile vegetable tart erbazzone, as well as the secrets of making tagliatelle and other pasta doughs, and an irresistible Veal Scaloppine Bolognese
From Le Marche: Farro with Roasted Pepper Sauce, Lamb Chunks with Olives, and Stuffed Quail in Parchment
From Umbria: A taste of the sweet Norcino black truffle, and seductive dishes such as Potato-Mushroom Cake with Braised Lentils, Sausages in the Skillet with Grapes, and Chocolate Bread Parfait
From Abruzzo: Fresh scrippelle (crêpe) ribbons baked with spinach or garnishing a soup, fresh pasta made with a “guitar,” Rabbit with Onions, and Lamb Chops with Olives
From Molise: Fried Ricotta; homemade cavatelli pasta in a variety of ways; Spaghetti with Calamari, Shrimp, and Scallops; and Braised Octopus
From Basilicata: Wedding Soup, Fiery Maccheroni, and Farro with Pork Ragù
From Calabria: Shepherd’s Rigatoni, steamed swordfish, and Almond Biscottini
From Sardinia: Flatbread Lasagna, two lovely eggplant dishes, and Roast Lobster with Bread Crumb Topping

This is just a sampling of the many delights Lidia has uncovered. All the recipes she shares with us in this rich feast of a book represent the work of the local people and friends with whom she made intimate contact—the farmers, shepherds, foragers, and artisans who produce local cheeses, meats, olive oils, and wines. And in addition, her daughter, Tanya, takes us on side trips in each of the twelve regions to share her love of the country and its art.

Great Price Making Artisan Gelato: 45 Recipes and Techniques for Crafting Flavor-Infused Gelato and Sorbet at Home

Making Artisan Gelato: 45 Recipes and Techniques for Crafting Flavor-Infused Gelato and Sorbet at Home Review

My latest try from this wonderful book was the Pink Peppercorn Gelato. Yes. Really. And it was ab.so.lute.ly superb! (I also drizzled a VERY small spoonful, perhaps a half teaspoon, of chocolate-infused Balsamic vinegar over the top. [Yes. Really. Source: Fustini's in Traverse City, MI]) The entire book is excellent -- the measurements are correct, techniques easy to follow, and the results... delicious. BUY THIS BOOK AND SURPRISE SOMEONE YOU LOVE!

Click Here To View More Specification...

Product Overview

The word gelato, in Italian, simply means “ice cream,” but its meaning has shifted to define a type of high-end frozen dessert, made with milk, not cream. Gelato also has 35% less air whipped into it than ice cream, heightening its rich mouthfeel without tipping the scales. Gelato, in all its luxury, is simple to make at home with a standard ice-cream maker.

Making Artisan Gelato, following on the heels of Making Artisan Chocolates, will offer 45+ recipes and flavor variations for exquisite frozen desserts, made from all-natural ingredients available at any grocery store or farmer’s market.

From pureeing and straining fruit to tempering egg yolks for a creamy base, the gelato-making techniques included in Making Artisan Gelato ensure quality concoctions. Recipe flavors run the gamut—nuts, spices, chocolate, fruit, herbs, and more—with novel flavor pairings that go beyond your standard-issue fare.

Great Price Marlene Koch's Sensational Splenda Recipes: Over 375 Recipes Low in Sugar, Fat, and Calories

Marlene Koch's Sensational Splenda Recipes: Over 375 Recipes Low in Sugar, Fat, and Calories Review

I have this book for awhile now and held off reviewing until I tried several recipes. I found every one of them a little too sweet except for the cheesecakes. However, that said, I do not like sweet chocolate - prefer bittersweet, so take that into account when considering the book. The cheesecakes were my favorite, especially the denser New York style. The unbelievable chocolate cake was very good, the brownies not so good; also too sweet and not as chewy as I like. However, I will decrease the Splenda in the future and possibly bake the brownies for a slightly shorter time to increase the 'chewy'. The pork was very good but again too sweet for my taste. It is an excellent book for what it is - sugar restricted recipes for fun foods. I have given one as a gift so I do like the book, albeit with the above-mentioned tweaking.

Check Out Home Cheese Making: Recipes for 75 Delicious Cheeses for $10.00

Home Cheese Making: Recipes for 75 Delicious Cheeses Review

New to cheese making I wanted to get the lowdown on what it takes, plus have a bank of recipies to try out. This book delivers all this plus lots of very nice anecdotes of other people's experiences and successes.

Being American based, this book has all its weights and measures in imperial. This is the only fault I can find with the book, in this day an age where only 3 countries in the world still use Imperial, I would have thought that metric equivalents would have been provided, or at the very least a conversion table in the appendices. Hence the four stars, get that sorted and I'd give it a five no problem.

Measurement conversions aside, I'm looking forward to trying out some of the many recipese provided in the book, they look great!

Great Price Bohemian San Francisco - Its Restaurants And Their Most Famous Recipes - The Elegant Art Of Dining

Bohemian San Francisco - Its Restaurants And Their Most Famous Recipes - The Elegant Art Of Dining Review

Interesting, if not especially well-written. As a former resident of San Francisco, I enjoyed this book for its comprehensive overview of the pre-1906 streets, restaurants and culture of the city. I was a little shocked by the author's casual racism (attitudes and words which were probably commonplace back then, even in "bohemian San Francisco.") And the florid, overblown Victorian language is a bit much at times. But overall, worth reading.

Check Out The Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook: Whole Foods Recipes for Personal and Planetary Health, Second Edition for $22.95

The Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook: Whole Foods Recipes for Personal and Planetary Health, Second Edition Review

This has been the only cookbook I have been using for the last 1 1/2 months and I keep discovering more great things every day!

I started with a couple of weeks of testing some recipes to see if I could make it through the Elimination diet laid out in the book and wasn't disappointed. Many of the recipes are truly originial...Ali Segersten is a master when it comes to using herbs and spices and original cooking techniques.

The Elimination diet scared me a little...my favorite meals are a tall latte in the morning and bread with cheese and wine for dinner, neither one you can have on this...but I was finally ready to find out just what foods are keeping me from feeling my best. While I am a pretty healthy, active person, fatigue and recurring sinus issues are bothering me and if it's in my control to improve those through eating the right meals, I am up for it!

I am now on day 29 with no intention of stopping anytime soon...I feel great and am amazed at how easy it has been. Besides the physical well-bring, my mind is so much clearer, calmer, happier and less anxious. I have often wondered if I have adult ADD...if it's the not eating Gluten that is relieving the "brain fog", I am happy to cut out wheat from my diet. We'll see if that's it when I get to the challenge phase. Being a pretty hyper person to start with, not drinking coffee is probably the right thing for me anyway, too!

Eating wholesome, nutritious food for each meal, keeps me so well nourished, that I just don't feel the horrible cravings I remember from diets I had done in the past. I am never hungry and my bloodsugar ups and downs are gone(agave nectar in my herbal teas is the best thing ever!).

I am doing the elimination diet strictly for health reasons, not for weightloss. However, it is the perfect plan to follow if that is your intent. In fact, I am having a hard time NOT losing weight. I feel like I am eating like a horse and still lost a few pounds unintentionally.

Yes, this book takes some adjusting to, no matter what your current diet is, but if you stick with this kind of cooking, you will realize the payoffs when it comes to your health and you will want to keep going. I am reading "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver at the same time and eating organically grown foods, preferably from local sources makes sense on so many levels.

Favorite recipes (that the rest of the family will happily eat, too) are:
- Quinoa and black bean salad p. 234 (my teenagers tried it and asked for more!)
- Wild Salmon with Ginger Lime Marinade p. 276 (to die for...)
- Autumn Harvest Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette p. 178
- Blueberry Fruit Pie with Raw Nut Crust p. 334
- Creamy Cauliflower Soup p. 162
- Coconut Vegetable Curry with Chickpeas p. 255
- roasted red pepper soup p. 164

I bought a Blendtec blender to make the smoothies with from Costco (they match the 7 year warranty offered by Vitamix through Costco demos only) and have not regretted it. Not eating out and not drinking wine for a month paid for it, and there is no way I would give it up, now. I use it every day and love it! A friend of mine uses her regular blender and the smoothies are just a little chunkier, but still ok, if you don't want to go for the expense.

[...]. The first part of the Elimination diet is very restricted and I felt the book is lacking a little in getting you through the rough days. The authors addressed that in their blog and added lots of recipes and other very useful information there.

The Cinnamon-Sunflower truffles got me through my sweet cravings and I had to start hiding the box, so my teenagers wouldn't eat them all!!
[...]

Now that I am getting to the challenge phase, I can't wait to add some other grains so I can try some of the baked goods!

Check Out Vegan Brunch: Homestyle Recipes Worth Waking Up For--From Asparagus Omelets to Pumpkin Pancakes for $6.50

Vegan Brunch: Homestyle Recipes Worth Waking Up For--From Asparagus Omelets to Pumpkin Pancakes Review

describes both Isa and (all)her cookbooks. The recipes create really enjoyable food, with intelligent ingredients, producing sassy flavor! The only thing I question is WHY any Vegan would want a recipe to make fake dead meat? The book has so many great, straight vegan choices, why encourage the carnivor? Pretty soon "humans" will have eaten all other creatures to extinction except maybe cows and chickens and they, mere clones of their former selves, are crowded into stock yards and poltry factories being fattened on cloned corn!
Given that, Vegan excludes even fake meat as far as I am concerned.

Check Out The 30-Minute Vegan: Over 175 Quick, Delicious, and Healthy Recipes for Everyday Cooking for $9.84

The 30-Minute Vegan: Over 175 Quick, Delicious, and Healthy Recipes for Everyday Cooking Review

I'm a cookbook junkie. I have to hold myself back from buying more cookbooks, because I'm really good at convincing myself I need another one. I've been vegan for almost five years, and am allergic to soy. This has been proven more difficult to cook with old favorites, especially trying to eat healthier (let's face it - as much as I love Isa, her recipes aren't exactly the epitome of health). As a full-time student with a part-time job, and a foodie, I found it really hard to squeeze in cooking yummy food as much as I wanted.

So with enough background about me, I can fully say that I recommend this book to anyone and everyone, omnivores and herbivores alike. The recipes are easy enough, with many variations, and turn out magically delicious. I've never owned a cookbook with so many delicious recipes. It's my go-to cookbook when I want to impress my non-vegan friends, and even a picky 7 year-old gulped down the "pleasing greens" soup, to the amazement of her grateful mother.

Without getting to mushy here, I seriously feel blessed to have this cookbook in my life. It's been a vehicle to many delicious, nutritious and vibrantly versatile dinners. A must have for every kitchen.

Great Price 5 Spices, 50 Dishes: Simple Indian Recipes Using Five Common Spices

5 Spices, 50 Dishes: Simple Indian Recipes Using Five Common Spices Review

Ruta Kahate's 5 Spices, 50 Dishes is a fun, non-intimidating introduction to cooking simplified Indian cuisine at home. True to its title, each recipe uses one or a combination of five common spices easily found in any grocery store: coriander seeds, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, ground cayenne, and ground turmeric. The first section of the book includes a description of each spice, one essential technique for Indian cooking (tadka), advice on choosing chiles, making ginger and garlic pastes, whole vs. ground spices, cooking oil, cilantro, salt, and coconut milk. There is also a page with menu ideas. It's a sparse yet very thorough introduction and enough information to get anyone cooking in no time.

The author herself, a native of India, has the chops to pull this all together. She ran her own cooking school, worked as a food consultant, and led culinary tours of India. According to her web site she is also building a destination culinary school in the coastal state of Goa. A lifetime of experience translates into recipes such as Spicy Eggplant with Tomatoes, Punjabi Red Beans, New Bride Chicken Curry, even a Basic Chai, all made accessible with familiar ingredients and basic cooking instructions. No special kitchen skills or equipment are needed.

The sections are broken down into Vegetables, Dals, Beef and Lamb, Chicken and Eggs, Seafood, Salads and Raitas, Rice and Bread, Sweets, and A Perfect Cup of Chai. There is an index and a helpful conversion table in the back.

Visually, this is a stunning book. Although not each recipe has a photo of the finished dish (and this is a turn-off for many cooks) those that are included are clean and colorful, without frills or superfluous garnishing. It's a paperback, and a sturdy one at that, bound to withstand countless trips from the bookshelf to the kitchen.

While this is not a vegetarian book, it offers an excellent selection of dishes for people who don't eat meat. The Black-Eyed Peas in a Spicy Goan Curry is an absolutely delicious dish that is also suitable for vegans, and other dishes involving meat can easily be made with tofu, vegetables, or beans. There are enough options so no-one has to feel left out.

What's not included in this book are the traditional curries found at Indian buffet restaurants, in the frozen food section, or in jars on the supermarket shelves. No Rogan Josh, no Butter Chicken, no Vindaloo. These are definitely lighter recipes, and a nice change from heavily sauced dishes.

My personal experience with this book has been quite successful. I have made the Spicy Eggplant with Tomatoes, Railway Potatoes, Everyday Yellow Dal, Black-Eyed Peas in a Spicy Goan Curry, Punjabi Red Beans, and others. I find this to be an essential volume to fall back on when I want something, I'm not quite sure what, but I want it fast, I want it to taste good, and I don't want it to be pasta.

I can easily recommend this book for anyone who wants to get a little something different on the table for family, for guests, or even for oneself.

Great Price The Complete Book of Pickling: 250 Recipes from Pickles and Relishes to Chutneys and Salsas

The Complete Book of Pickling: 250 Recipes from Pickles and Relishes to Chutneys and Salsas Review

I initially checked this book out from my local library, but was so immediately pleased with the results of several recipes that I had to get my own copy. The recipes are printed large enough to be read easily and all steps are explained fully. There are some absolutely beautiful pictures, but if I have any gripe at all, it's that I'd rather see each picture next to the corresponding recipe, rather than having the pictures grouped in clusters in various sections throughout the book.

I pickled a number of vegetables this past fall using this book for guidance. Among them were onions, radishes and beets. I also tried a couple of the chutney recipes and was pleased with the outcomes. So far, there hasn't been a single recipe that I wouldn't consider using again. Aside from another chutney recipe that I plan to try soon, I can't wait until summer/fall harvests to try some others. I certainly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys all types of pickling.
